I really thought I’d already archived this, but apparently not.  This is, I think, one of two Orison post-eps that I like.  The other I can’t really remember, but I’m sure I’ll stumble upon it again some day.  Anyway, this story is lovely and tender and quite different from anything else by this writer.  The only complaint I have is that the final line of the story is unnecessary and, IMO, takes away from the beauty of what has preceded it.  So I’m going to push it way down the end so I don’t have to see it. Apparently I am not because wordpress refuses to acknowledge my forced line breaks. *kicks it*

It Hardly Signifies by Kent (1/2)

“I am sad and grumpy,” I say to fic.  “Cheer me up.”  And, lo, I remember a P&P fic I haven’t read in a while that is not too long, but more than short.  The Hunsford proposal never happens in this Situation Departure (a category that I think Anghraine came up with – we use it at The Pointed Quill, at any rate) and Lizzy learns of Darcy’s true character (and Wickham’s) by different means.  Darcy, likewise, learns of Lizzy’s opinion of him via different channels, and the whole thing is resolved with rather less angst than the original.  The same happy ending ensues.  Of course.  The dialogue’s too modern in places, the ending’s a bit eh and Kent is rather notorious for his obsession with Lizzy’s bosom, but on the whole it’s a nice, light, quick read.

Inevitable by Flynn

I’ve been talking about kissing a lot lately and I remembered this fic.  There’s about an 80:20 ratio of things I like to things I don’t like, but the kissing is A++.  Also, milk and cookies.  On nom nom.  I changed the rating down from NC-17 to R, ’cause it’s not very porny, really.  Jeez, people, stop getting my hopes up. *cough*

A Bitter Taste on the Tongue by Jane Mortimer

So I have finally found a layout that both displays the tags on each entry,  leaves off the date and is not white.  It’s not the most attractive thing ever, but it’s got almost all of the features I’ve been pining for.  Huzzah.

This is one the sexiest and most painful fics I’ve read.  The pain of the early seasons is sharper, to me, than the slow bleed of later seasons.  Imagine Mulder believes he’s discovered that Scully really is a spy.  But she isn’t.

I was inspired to post this fic to the archive because yesterday I watched a vid file of an interview Gillian did back in 1994, six weeks after Piper was born.  And she was so impossibly adorable that I almost peed my pants.  Here’s to baby!Gillian and, by extension, baby!Scully.

Bittersweet Release by adara

I have no idea how many times I’ve read this fic, yet tonight is the first time I ever noticed the name of the nightclub where it initially takes place.  And my brain says: AHAHAHAHA, OMG YOU ARE SO LAME.  So, yeah.

It seems like I really should pay attention to matching up the fics on my hard drive with the fics here, so tonight I’m starting with A. (I name them author-first in my directory.)  The first part of this fic hits so many of my kinks that it’s amazing my head doesn’t come off.  It’s kind of cliche in its Scully-voice, but the writing on the whole is solid.  The, err, scenario is definitely original, too, if a little difficult to believe *hugs her suspension of disbelief tightly*.  Questions of legality and likelihood aside, this is pretty fucking hot.

Part 3 was always problematic for me until recently – it seemed melodramatic and overblown.  Since I’ve typed Scully as a 1w9, though, I’ve realised that this is actually a fairly good description of what she’d likely be going through in a similar situation.  I mean, it’s still fairly purple with Mulder’s little power trip, but in essentials it’s actually quite accurate.  Still, I mostly just read the porny bits.  ‘Cause I’m a pervert.

Waiting Period by Eleanore

This is an old, old fic from way back in 1995.  The scary thing is that when I think of 1995, it doesn’t seem that long ago.  I mean, I graduated from high school in 1995 and that was only—hey, wait, that was 14 years ago!  So, that’s pretty scary.  Anyway, unlike most fic written back then, this one does not feature the words “Fox” or “Dana” or “wedding” or children named “Melissa” or any other dreadful cliche from the early fandom years.  It’s not, of course, without its problems – particularly in the second half.  There are many things that make me cringe (the use of the word ‘button’ springs to mind), including some instances of characterisation.  But, on the whole, I really like this fic because I think it manages to achieve a certain realism for the characters as they were, without falling all the way over into that which will make me vomit.  Maybe it’s just my overwhelming fondness of the early seasons; I can’t say for sure.  What I can say is that even in the current climate of porn battles and whatnot, the eroticism of the opening scene remains extremely well-executed and heady.  I also like Mrs Scully in this – she’s a very underused character in fic, in my completely-not-humble opinion.

Playing the Game by Rowan Darkstar

Someone at haven posted a fic search question and this story popped into my head, except – of course – i could only remember the storyline and not the author or the title. Someone else commented on my response and added the popcorn element, which gave me enough information to search and find the fic. Then I slapped myself on the forehead and told myself to hurry up and archive it before I forgot again. So, here we are.

This is an exquisite gem of a character piece. I wish I’d written it. It features a variation of truth or dare, the exploration of Scully’s position in a man’s world, and a great deal of tenderness. It makes my insides hum with happy satisfaction.  (Again, I’m changing the rating.  I really have no idea why it’s rated R, so I’ve bumped it down to PG.)

The Repeat Customer by aka ‘Jake’

This one it took me ages to find again because all I could remember (aside from the basic plot) was Mulder’s reference to Scully’s line in The Host.  Thank heavens for Gossamer’s post-ep listings.  Again, I’ve dropped the rating down from NC-17 to R on this one because there’s almost nothing in here except mentions of drugs and prostitution.   The narrator actually is a prostitute and I really enjoy the way aka ‘Jake’ has fleshed her out; we get a sense of her history and her personality while she’s also revealing a lot about Mulder.  That sort of thing takes a deft touch and I admire it very much.  While this is technically a Mulder/Other story, at its heart it’s MSR, and that’s really what makes it special.

The Gentle Art of Dream Interpretation by Cecily Sasserbaum

This author doesn’t get enough fandom recognition, and this story is probably her best.  It’s intelligent, poignant and full of longing.  If I could read about history this way, I might have not hated the classes so much in high school.  To summarise: Mulder and Scully are on a case, Mulder has a dream, Scully goes for a swim and Mulder goes to find Scully.  That’s pretty paltry in comparison to the actual story, though.  It’s rated R but I don’t think it really deserves it, so I’m giving it a PG.  ’Cause I can.

Teetering by MD1016

Life has sucked quite spectacularly of late and so I’ve been reading fic to comfort myself.  This isn’t really a comforting fic, as such, but I discovered I’d saved it on my computer and how much I like it.  There’s a nice edginess to it, but still the possibility of a reasonably happy ending.  And the great thing is that there’s no carpet burn in fic.  This might be the first fic I’ve archived which contains one of my biggest kinks: premature ejaculation.  I don’t know why I like it; I just do.

Stop Me by Gina Rain

I’ve been in something of a rut lately.  Unlike most people, I actually enjoy my ruts and tend not to have any desire to get out of them.  Unfortunately, that tendency makes me less inclined to go to any efforts, even when those efforts extend to my own projects.  But, here I am, making an effort, in a sad attempt at procrastinating an even greater effort, namely writing fic.

I like a lot of Gina Rain’s fic.  This is her take on the obligatory sharing a bed cliche.  I like it.  That’s all, really.

Moonshine by Sabine (excerpt)

This is actually the third in a trilogy that I don’t particularly like, but I like the following because it pretty much sums up how I feel about how Mulder and Scully feel about each other.  Yeah.  It’s from the POV of someone who knew Scully in college and who has always had a tendre for her.  M&S are at her house, they’ve fought about the fact that they slept together once after they attended the wedding of a man Scully had been in love with in college.  God, it’s like a soap opera.

Birthday by Jess

I should be writing my paper, but I reread this while I was eating my lunch and it made me feel so warm and fuzzy that I had to add it before I forgot again.  Jess has an amazing ability to combine joy and sex and angst together to make something beautiful.  I love the way she writes Mulder, and the way she writes Scully through Mulder’s eyes.  And this fic contains one of those lines that gets stuck in my head sometimes and makes me shiver.

…even when it felt like I going to die if I didn’t slip through those damn connecting doors and rub the entire length of my body on you?”

That image just… guh.  My paper is even more unappealing now.  My life!  It is so hard!

I really admire the skill of the writing in this story.  It’s not flashy or showy but it’s deft and strong.  The case weaves around the MSR until it’s all one thing.  The tone, the characterisation, even the alternating points of view, are all done so well that it just feels seamless.  I want to write like this when I grow up.

Ask About the Weather by Rachel Howard

I don’t read many post-colonisation fics, and I like even fewer. But tonight I decided that as a post-paper-finishing treat, I’d read some fic. And then I decided that I should try and be at least a little methodical about it and go through some of the bookmarks on this computer because they, um, bear no resemblance to the hundreds of bookmarks on my other computer. I am not an addict.

Rachel Howard snuck up on me with this one. I don’t want to like it, and I don’t really like it, but I’ve got to save it anyway.
